The Osijek and Baranja county is situated in northeastern Croatia and borders with Hungary. It is very important Croatian area placed in the Pannonian plain and stretches along the river Drava.
Osijek is the centre and the most important town in this region, located on the right side of the river Drava. Today, it is a administrative, cultural, university and industrial centre while in the past it was an Illyrian settlement, later it was known as a Roman settlement called Mursa and it was also under the Turkish and Hungarian rule. The area of Osijek and Baranja is a historical region with a lot of historic and cultural sights. The very famous urban core Tvrda once was the headquarters of the Austrian Empire for Slavonia.
This region is also called The Wheat Fields of Croatia and is famous in the touristic sense for Kopacki rit, a natural phenomena that is placed at the point where the Drava flows into the Dunav. It is a nature park and bird preservation with rich flora and fauna and has more than 275 species.
The free zone of Osijek has 18 new schools, numerous gyms, kindergartens and health care clinics. Shortly after the war in this region a new bridge was built over the river Drava at Osijek, the new airport and the restoration of the Osijek port, the telecommunications centre and the introduction of gas, etc.
Slavonija and Baranja county is mostly lowland and because of that geographic fact it is an ideal place for agriculture development.
This region has rich culture tradition with a lot of manifestations that includes music, art and very famous Slavonic folklore.
