Telašćica Bay

Telašćica Bay, Travel Guide with travel tips for holidays in Telašćica Bay, Croatia

The Nature Park Telascica Bay on Dugi Otok "Long Island" is located in Dalmatia, Croatia. In 1988, the Telascica Bay area - with thirteen islands and islets - was protected as a Nature Park. Located near the entrance of the National Park Kornati, the Nature Park Telascica Bay is simply amazing.

While the Northeast end of Dugi Otok is bare of vegetation, the Southwest is full of pine, olive and fig trees. Many local fishing villages dot the island. The average July temperature is a mild 24.1 degrees Celsius.

The three main attractions of the Nature Park Telascica Bay are the Salt Lake Mir, the "Stene" Cliffs and the bay. The Nature Park contains numerous biological, geological and geomorphological phenomena - with over 400 plant species, 79 bird species and Palaeolithic remains.

The Salt Lake Mir has an area of 230,000 square meters and a depth of 10 meters. It was created by sea water filling its Karst depression through lake floor cracks. This warm water is noted for its medicinal properties.

Telascica BayThe sharp-rising "Stene" cliffs shelter the bay from wind and waves, providing wonderful panoramic views. The highest peak, "Grpascak" rises 166 meters (544 feet).

Telascica Bay is 8 kilometers (5 miles) long and appears to be three different lakes. It is one of the largest and most beautiful bays in the Adriatic Sea. A beautiful entrance cove hides a portion of the bay behind towering cliffs.

Many animals await visitors: frogs, owls, dolphins and "mouflans" (wild, reddish-brown sheep). Scuba diving is a popular activity for investigating the underwater flora and fauna - the carnivorous sponge, red coral and "Kajman" eel. Kayak and sailing tours are also available.

Local folklore spins tales around places like the Gmajno Polje Valley Sinkhole, where water disappears underground. Nearby Sali has "Donkey races".

Two Nature Park restaurants serve top-quality seafood and domestic wines.

Telascica Bay is located on the Southwest side of the Zadar Archipelago. Tourists can fly into the Zadar airport. Then take a ferry, running an average of 3 to 4 times daily in the summer for 7 Euros or 10 US Dollars. A hydrofoil service is available. You can also rent bicycles, boats and scooters.

The Nature Park ticket price is 50 Kuna - about 7 Euros or 10 US Dollars.

Telascica Bay is a quiet nature reserve, removed from busier vacation sites. Return to nature by enjoying this beautiful park.
