Vodnjan, is a town in Istria, Croatia with a long history, a diverse population, and, luckily for tourists, it is very near the Adriatic Sea. Vodnjan is a fairly small town, but with so much going on in this area of Croatia, it is a great place to visit. It is set among olive trees and vineyards, where it has the advantage of a mild Mediterranean climate.
History
Vodnjan’s history is quite unique. It has been owned and operated by a number of different cultures over its many centuries. At one point Vodnjan served as the central military base for the Roman empire. But most of this city’s soul comes from its centuries of Venetian rule. In the old city, there are numberous Gothic buildings that really give the old city its identity.
Culture
For those searching for museums and art in Vodnjan, look no further than its many beautiful churches. The Church of Saint Jakob and Parish Church are two of the must-see churches in town. Both are home to beautiful paintings, statues, and other historical objects of interest. But, the absolute top destination in Vodnjan is the Basilica of Saint Blaz. Saint Blaz was built by the Venetians in the style of San Pietro Cathedral in Venice. This church contains some of the oddest tourist attractions you may have ever seen: mummified corpses. Right, and not just any mummified corpses – they are the mummified corpses of several saints.
Things to do
There are a good number of things to do in and around Vodnjan. One of the most interesting excursions is to walk the various narrow streets that cut through the city. The buildings seem to be built on top of each other, with the various cultures showing through the architecture. You never know what great photograph or unique building will catch your eye. The city hall of Vodnjan is definitely worth a visit and a few pictures.
Other day trips from Vodnjan can be trips to some incredible beaches on the Adriatic Sea in the towns of Pula and Fažana. Other nearby towns offer even more art and culture than the churches of Vodnjan. The towns of Medulin and Rovinj provide art galleries, cultural tours, and some nice restaurants.
How to reach us
The best way to get to Vodnjan is to first find your way to Pula. From Pula, there are hourly buses that can take you to Vodnjan (just 6 km away). When traveling from longer distances, it is important to know that there is a fairly large airport in Pula. If you can fly in to Pula, you are ready to travel to Vodnjan and its many unique attractions.
