Located on the west coast of the Istrian peninsula in Croatia is the small town of Funtana. Funtana’s main attraction is boating. The marina is in the center of town and people who holiday here rent boats to sail to the neighboring islands or up and down the coast of Istria and Kvarner.
History
Funtana was named because there are clear springs right next to the sea shore. The water is drinkable and has been used for centuries. The Romans built villas near the springs in the 2nd century and the town still uses the springs for a water source.
The nearby archipelago of Brijuni is a national park. The park contains the remains of Roman and Byzantine Empires. Golfing, biking, hiking and a safari park filled with zebras, giraffes and other will animals are just some of the attractions. There are ancient Roman temples that amazed everyone who visits.
Culture
Classical music concerts and other cultural events are held in the Basilica known as Euphrasios which is placed in the very popular nearby town Porec. There are summer festivals and street festivals and a regional museum where you can listen to music concerts and jazz. The town also has a small gallery, and Valkanela, a sculpture park created by Dusan Dzamonja. There is a yearly festival called St. Bernard’s festival where music and the atmosphere takes you back in time. St. Bernard is the patron saint of Funtana.
Things to do
The food in Funtana is known as Istrian cuisine. Delicacies like fuzi, gnocchi and meats and vegetables topped with sauces are unique to the area. The Istrian wine is excellent and is usually enjoyed with meat, fish and shellfish, prepared the Istrian way. There are many restaurants that serve this traditional style of eating.
Apartments and private homes are also available so you can find something that fits your budget and needs. The nightlife is an active one. The town has discos and café’s where music and dancing is enjoyed into the morning hours. There is something to do in Funtana day and night.
