Island Vis

Island Vis, Travel Guide with travel tips for holidays in Island Vis, Croatia

History

In the 4th century B.C. the island of Vis, off the Croatian coast in the Adriatic Sea, was known as the island of Issa. It was an independent city-state that had its own money and established other colonies in the first century B.C. Through the years the island has been fought over many times and now it is part of Croatia. The island has two towns and 3,617 people live there. There are some smaller settlements on the island that are not on the coast which are farming areas. Twenty percent of the island's land is planted for wine production. It's also a big fishing area, so the economy is based on those two industries, although tourism does support it as well

The area around the island is great for diving, snorkeling and boating. There are several shipwrecks and other deep sea secrets that are waiting to be discovered in the waters off of Vis. There is an Archeological Museum and a Museum of Fisheries in the two ancient cities of  Vis and Komiza. There are several crystal clear bays. Tourists can visit the island of Bisevo, the home the Blue cave, an iridescent reflection of blue and silver shades that mesmerizes visitors. The limestone hills and fertile valleys are intermingled with sand dunes.

Gastronomy and food

The hotels and private apartments are clean and the island food is sure to make a lasting impression. Fresh fish, lobster, lamb, sheep and goat cheese along with the excellent harvest of the local wine make this a dream come true. Senko, sitting on a hilltop surrounded by wild flowers overlooking the Adriatic, is perhaps the only restaurant in the world where you can enjoy a nine-hour lunch and then be invited to clean up. It’s owned by Senko Karuza an artist, chef and philosopher.

Beaches

The beaches are private and the water and sky are super blue. The wild mountain donkey trails and walking paths make this island an outdoor lover’s perfect holiday. There are ancient ruins to explore and artifacts to find.

The beautiful part of Vis is that it is not a well known island, so it remains untouched by mass tourism.

How to reach us

The nearest airport is in Split and there is a ferry that has regular service to and from Split. Vis is one of those places lost in time. A holiday here brings the magic back into your life. In fact, there is so much magic on the island you may just disappear in the beauty and stay a few more weeks.
