Varaždin county is situated in northern Croatia, near the border with Slovenia and Hungary, stretches from Gornje zagorje between mount Ivancica and the Drava river.
The Varaždin county has 6 larger towns: Varaždin, Ivanec, Ludbreg, Lepoglava, Novi Marof and Varaždinske Toplice and 22 communities.
The county dating from the past, was supported by the Bela III Croat-Hungarian king, and Varaždin was the very centre of the county, one of the most important towns in north Croatia in the 19th century.
The Catholic church had a great influence on the development of culture and art in Varaždin and the county. Varaždin is the best-preserved baroque town in Croatia, known as the Croatian "little Vienna" because of the cultural and musical heritage.
West of Varaždin is the well-known Trakoscan castle, situated on a hill next to a lake, that was owned by the Draskovic family since 1568. It was refurbished from a medieval fort to a pseudo-gothic castle and it is today a museum with a large collection of furniture, arms and portraits.
Here are The Varaždinske toplice spa, very famous for its therapeutic qualities, with geothermal waters that have been discovered near Ludbreg at the Lunjkovac locality.
